Tapered roller bearings are separable; the cone with the roller and cage assembly and the cup can be mounted separately. This modified line contact between rollers and raceways eliminates edge stressing. Tapered roller bearings accommodate high radial and axial loads. A tapered roller bearings can transmit axial loads only in one direction, a second, symmetrically arranged tapered roller bearing is usually needed for counterguidance. Tapered roller bearings are available in metric and inch sizes. They are not sealed ando not greased. They can be lubricated using oil or grease. Single row taper roller bearings can carry axial loads in one direction only. A radial load imposed on the bearing gives rise to an induced axial load which must be counteracted and the bearing is therefore generally adjusted against a second bearing. Some single row taper roller bearings are also avaible as matched paors in a face-to-face arrangement. These are specially manufacured so that when mounted immediately adjacent to each other, the predetermined axial internal clearance will be obtained and an even distribution of radial load achieved. Paired bearing arrangements are used where the load carrying capacity of a single bearing is inadequate, or the bearing arrengement must carry axial loads in both directions under given conditions of axial play.
