When choosing a hand magnifier, keep in mind that as the magnification power increases, the magnification lens size decreases. Also keep in mind that the higher the magnification power, the closer you will need to hold the hand magnifier to your eye and the closer your eye will have to be to the object you are viewing.
With a 10x magnifying glass, for example, you will need to hold the magnifying glass about 1 inch or so from your eye and have the object you are looking at about 1 inch or so from the magnifying glass. For this reason (and also because of the smaller lens size), higher power magnifiers are not necessarily the most comfortable for reading, but some might find them necessary to see.
If you're not sure what magnification you need, try starting with a mid-range power magnifier -- 4x to 5x magnifying power.
