Chilled Beam
Human comfort depends on our bodies being in thermal balance with our surroundings so that we can
lose the excess heat and moisture that we generate without becoming too hot or too cold or perspiring
excessively.
The chilled ceiling system introduces a new dimension to the heat exchange process with about 50%
of the heat exchange with the chilled ceiling being by radiation and the other 50% by convection with
the air circulating below the ceiling. This means that the chilled ceiling can directly control not only the
heat exchange by convection with the room air but also the heat exchange by radiation directly with
our bodies and indirectly via the surfaces around us.
This heat transfer is by three methods:
1 Radiation from our bodies to the room surfaces around us
2 Convection with the air around us
3 Evaporation or perspiration.
