Types of arrangement

 SKF standard bearing housings are designed to incorporate radial self-aligning rolling bearings, i.e.

– self-aligning ball bearings

– spherical roller bearings

– CARB bearings.

This is because a bearing arrangement usually involves two bearing positions on a shaft and accurate alignment of the two is usually difficult.

As a rule one of the two bearing housings must house a non-locating bearing and the other a locating bearing. Where the distance between the bearing positions is short it is possible to use "cross location"; see under "Bearing arrangements" in the catalogue "Rolling bearings".

The bearing seat in the housing generally has sufficient width to allow axial displacement of the bearing within the housing. Locating bearing arrangements are obtained by inserting locating rings . With some large housings, two versions are supplied; one non-locating and the other locating.

Generally, the housings also permit a variety of methods of mounting the bearing on the shaft

– on adapter sleeves and smooth shafts

– on adapter sleeves and stepped shafts

– on withdrawal sleeves and stepped shafts  and

– on cylindrical seats and stepped shafts.
