Yi Nationality
Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou and Guangxi are where the Yi ethnic group lives. The Yi population is about 6.57 million. They speak their own language, farm and raise animals and their dietary staples are corn, buckwheat and rice. Favored dishes are pickled and spicy food. Houses or watchtower buildings are constructed of timber and earth. Costumes worn by the Yi are colorful. A narrative epic called Ashima is a valued feature of their culture.

The Yi people believe in primitive religion, which shows the characteristics of animism and ancestor worship. They especially worship fire and regard it as a sacred object. They regard the tiger as their totem. The firepit is where the God of Fire lives.
