light weight with high strength corrosion resistance insolation performance long shelf life easy for installation

Types of resins:Polyester • Good all round performance- corrosion, fire, longevity Acrylic • Zero Halogen/Low Smokeused on most tunnels Phenolic • Extreme fire performance

The major Benefits:Low whole life cost, typically in excess of 30 years. Composites are corrosion resistant and maintenance freeVery low installation costs, typically between 30-40% less than steels with easier cutting, drilling and no deburring, painting or earthing

Tension, flexure & compression strengthapprox. 20 times that of steel with much greater safety factors. Composites do not permanently deform under high loads

Density and weight are significantlylower than steel (20% of steel for the same thickness) - reduced handling requirements

Composite materials are excellentinsulators, do not require earthing and have a thermal conductivity 1/60 of a steel product.

Compared to Stainless Steel GRPoffers the following significant benefits:• Lighter weight for easier handling(around 20% weight saving)• Simple cutting and drilling with handtools whereas S/Steel requireselectric tools• No deburring or filing of sharp edges• No earthing• As a consequence of the above, installation times are between30-40% less

• Material displays superior corrosion resistance to stainless steel, particularly with saline, chlorine or H2S which occur offshore• Material does not permanently deform under load and carries greater forces without damage• GRP will not conduct heat or the effects of a fire• GRP is ‘non-sparking’ and can be installed in any hazardous area WITHOUT the necessity to shut down costly processes Composites are specified for a number of reasons, the primary and most obvious being corrosion in wet or aggressiveareas. The offshore Oil and Gas market uses pultruded GRP for many applications around the world and this includes many of the worlds largest producers.

Less obvious applications include trays on the roofs of buildings where birds build their nests between the (warm) cables. The resulting acidic corrosion destroys the trays. Others have specified GRP instead of steel trays orladders because small metallic flakes have  previously caused short-circuiting acrosssensitive relay circuits.Lidded GRP is increasingly being used outdoors in hotter climates in non-corrosive applications where the effect of the sun onsteel cable trays is heating the cables to such an extent that they become de-rated. Using a steel cover has merely had the effect of ‘cooking’ the cables inside a tray which can be too hot to touch. As composites become more commonly used, there is evidence that new applications are continually being found.

MAINTENANCEAs protection against weathering, the products contain UV stabilisers and surface veils ensuring a long maintenance-free life.

STRENGTHGRP provides a higher tensile strength to weight ratio than equivalent steel products and does not permanently deform under excessive loads.THERMAL CONDUCTIVITYThe low thermal conductivity of GRP means the effects of fire are localised. GRP retains its integrity in situations where many metallic materials have degraded. GRP can also be effectively used in a wide temperature range from –140°C to +120°C. Special resins are also being developed to provide further enhanced fire performance over a greater time span.SELF-EXTINGUISHINGFire Retardant (zero halogen reduced smoke emission versions also available). When you use the EXEL GRP range you can be assured that you are getting a system which provides the most cost effective long term solution to the effects of corrosion and environment.
